Everyone has a dream of invisibility, and of course many people are also exploring the possibility of optical camouflage. The author thinks that optical camouflage can exist for different operational needs.
Optical fiber
Light is completely reflected as it passes through an optical fiber,so that light from one end can travel to the other,no matter how the middle fiber is wound. One of the principles of optical camouflage is that light from the back is transmitted to the front,so it looks transparent from the outside. The nice thing about fiber optics is that I can bypass buildings or human bodies so that the objects are"invisible".
But fiber optics don't work very well. There are two reasons,it requires a light source behind, and the light source has the phenomenon of weakening, the effect of stealth is only one-way:that is,front stealth. In addition, fiber optics are not soft enough to be used in personal devices. But there's no denying that fiber optics is a good idea.
Display+camera
This is one of the first optical camouflage approaches, where you have a display in the front and a camera in the back, projecting the view from the back onto the front.A team at Japan's Keio University has developed an"optical camouflage"that has made the back seat of a Toyota Prius transparent. The entire rear seat is the screen, and using the rear camera to collect images, and put them on the rear seat screen,it looks transparent.
This shows that this method can be applied to motor vehicles and aircraft. The Raptor, the secret US Area 51 project I wrote about earlier,is also rumored to be developing a stealthy aircraft.I believe this technology can be achieved, but the practicality may not be high.
Could this be used on personal stealth equipment? Not now,but maybe in the future. The world's smallest optical device, just three molecules thick,is so soft that it can be implanted into large areas of clothing, allowing it to change color in the future. It can also be used as a display screen for clothing.
Carbon nanotubes
According to a report in the prestigious academic journal Physical Society,a group of researchers at the University of Texas used carbon nanotubes to achieve invisibility.
Carbon nanotubes generate a high temperature that causes the medium around them to be unevenly dense, which bends the optical fibre passing from nearby:the principle is similar to a mirage.Of course, the refractive index of air caused by a mirage is not very high,so when the author sees a mirage,it is always a very far view.If it is used as an optical camouflage, the heat energy generated by it is very high, resulting in a large medium density difference over a certain distance.Carbon nanotubes, while soft, are expensive.
Quantum invisibility camouflage material
Developed by Hyperstealth Biotechnology,a Canadian company,it is secretive about its technology, but says the military has approached it to work with it.The company says the material bends light, including visible and infrared,so objects covered in it are undetectable. For reasons of confidentiality, the company declined to provide actual prototypes of the application, but has so far only provided simulations on its website.
