Belgian scientists have created the world's first stretchable'light path'.The idea behind it is that a wearable sensor or robotic tactile skin can use most of a standard glass fiber-optic cable, but to"connect"them, the device must be allowed to bend or stretch in between.
Made of poly-dimethylsiloxane(PDMS),the connection is transmitted through a transparent core wrapped in the same outer material--because light is not as easy as the traditional outer layer(which has a low refractive index),this design allows light to travel through the core.
In laboratory tests, the interconnectors have been able to retain their photoconductivity even when stretched 30 percent or wrapped around a person's finger.More importantly, the material retains 10%of its tensile properties after being mechanically stretched 80,000 times.
The interconnection was developed at Ghent University and the IMEC Micro-Electronics Research Center in Belgium in a related"Microsystems Technology Center".
